Temporary duty occurs when a military personnel is assigned to serve at a location other than their permanent duty station, where they are permanently stationed.

Upon completion of TDY orders, the service member always returns to his permanent duty station. Life would be a lot easier if acronyms were universal across all branches of the military, but unfortunately they are not.

The abbreviation TDY is used in the Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard, but is a different abbreviation for the Navy and Marines. Although both are military commands, there is a technical difference between TDY and deployment.

Why Deployment Orders Are Different Than Tdy Orders

Deployments are comparable to military TDYs, except that members are assigned to a specific operation, usually involving foreign combat operations. Placement orders are subject to their own rules and regulations. They are handled differently than PCS or TDY orders.

The arrangement is usually in groups. So an individual Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine will receive deployment orders with another group headed to the same location. Deployment of activities will require team processing within and outside the region.

In contrast, a set of TDY orders does not replace any of them. So the phrase "temporary duty" indicates that the service member has not been transferred to a new command. Assignments do not affect the service member's current assignment.

Temporary duty in the United States Air Force is authorized by commanders of the Civil Air Patrol Service. Accommodation, food, travel and other expenses are covered for Air Force members just like Army personnel. Ranging from a few days to half a year, temporary duty orders last as long as necessary to carry out military directives.

How Long Is A Tdy?

Long-term TDYs are often longer than 30 days, although they usually do not exceed 180 days. Deployments typically have more "boots on the ground" time. Traditionally, in recent decades, 179 days has been a typical deployment length.

The reason for this arbitrary number has more to do with the way this type of liability is classified. A permanent change of station (PCS), usually called a reassignment or sometimes (depending on the branch of service) a "deployment" (but not an "actual" deployment to a combat zone or forward location).

A combination of different situations. In some cases the service member's pay and allowances are changed based on PCS orders. Allowances for living expenses, housing allowances and separate rations paid at the previous duty station will vary depending on the command or policies received at the site.

However, as with TDYs, upon completion of the deployment, the personnel returns to their original assigned base or duty station. Used for a variety of reasons or purposes, temporary duty assignments refer to military duties that are performed outside of a military member's designated duty station.

Once they complete their mission, they return to their original base unit. Whether you're doing research or planning to serve in the military in the future, you should be familiar with military jargon. So, what does TDY mean in the military?

While on TDY, service members will perform their assigned duties and follow all applicable military regulations and policies. TDY status may be required even when troops are serving in the same primary geographic area as the member's home base.

The daily rate is designed to include foods and depends on whether they are staples or not. If they remain on base and have a mandatory option, the service member will receive one portion per day.

When assigned to TDY, service members must be away from their home station for the duration of the assignment. Depending on the TDY location, service members may be required to travel by commercial aircraft, military aircraft, or ground transportation.

Upon arrival at their TDY location, service members typically contact their sponsor or location and obtain an explanation of the local area and any specific requirements or restrictions.
